Spays & neuters
Benefits of spaying and neutering your pet
Spaying or neutering your pet can prevent unwanted litters, drastically reduce the chances of mammary gland or testicular cancer, and reduce behaviors such as fighting, aggression, and anxiety. In females, spaying removes heat cycles, which stops bleeding, nervousness, and whimpering when heat cycles would have come. In male dogs, neutering may also reduce excessive urine marking and humping.
Generally, veterinarians recommend spaying or neutering as early as 6 months of age. Your vet will consult with you on the best time for your pet depending on species, breed, size, and any pre-existing health concerns.
Spays and neuters are a very common elective surgery with minimal recovery time.
During surgery, your pet is anesthetized and does not feel any pain. The surgeon monitors heart rate, breathing, and oxygenation during the procedure. Females will have a small abdominal incision post surgery, while males will have a small incision just in front of or over the scrotal area.
Our hospital has participated in the Hawaiian Humane Society Neuter Now program for the past 20 years. The Hawaiian Humane Society provides a Neuter Now certificate for purchase from their facility or participating satellite City Halls. This program was designed to help control overpopulation of animals on Oahu. Costs for each certificate depends on your pet's species and gender. Certificates are taken to a participating veterinary hospital prior to spay/neuter appointment for your pet. Additional fees for the spay/neuter procedure are discussed at that time.
